OTTAWA, March 8, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Canada’s ruling Liberal Party overwhelmingly endorsed leader Paul Martin’s same-sex “marriage” legislation at its annual policy convention last weekend.

“What’s next, pedophilia?” asked Cathal Marlow of Quebec, one of only a few courageous Liberals who openly opposed the measure, according to a Globe and Mail account. Marlow was ridiculed when he said homosexual “marriage” was “an abomination.” Later, he said he would have said more, “But you see what happens: any further and I’d have been lynched.”

Meanwhile the Defend Marriage coalition published another full-page advertisement in the National Post this past Saturday. It read, “Can We Trust Joe Volpe?” referring to Liberal MP Volpe’s flip-flop from his previous endorsement of traditional marriage in August 2003 when speaking to the Canada Christian College in Toronto. He said then that the Ontario court decision legalizing same-sex “marriage” was an “error” that needed correction.

Canada Christian College president Dr. Charles McVety, founder of Defend Marriage, organized a rally outside the Liberal convention Saturday. Volpe and fellow Liberals – Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan and Natural Resources Minister John Efford – all promised to fight same-sex “marriage,” Dr. McVety said.

Volpe, for example, “made a passionate appeal” in defence of traditional marriage in 2003, Dr. McVety said. “He said if we believe in something then we must defend it. If we believe in something, we must promote it. And then as soon as we support him, as soon as he gets into power, he takes the easy way out and betrays all of our trust.”

“And then what do they do? They call us stupid.” Dr. McVety said, referring to buttons circulated at the convention that read, “It’s the Charter, Stupid.”

Liberal MP Paul Szabo of Toronto, another vocal opponent of same-sex “marriage,” said the Liberal endorsement was the result of an erroneous notion of equality rights.
