UNITED NATIONS RULES AGAINST ONTARIO CATHOLIC SCHOOL FUNDING

TORONTO, Nov 8 (LSN.ca) – A United Nations human rights committee ruled Friday that Ontario, and thus Canada, is violating an international agreement by allowing public funding for Catholic schooling in the province without funding other religious schooling. The ruling gave Canada 90 days to comply with the order, although it is not legally binding. The Ontario government responded that it is committed to the current system of funding, but the federal government appears to be taking the ruling more seriously.

Michael O’Shaughnessy, Foreign Affairs spokesman, told the National Post, “The government of Canada will not be able to provide a response until the decision is first studied and consultation is undertaken with the government of Ontario, keeping in mind that education is a provincial responsibility.” The Post suggests that without following the ruling Canada stands to lose its reputation at the UN as a “human rights” leader.

While the right of Catholics to direct their taxes to support the Catholic school system is guaranteed by the constitution, a serious matter of contention in this case is the despotic attitude of the United Nations, which clearly considers Canadian domestic affairs within its sphere of jurisdiction. This disregard for national sovereignty is a gross violation of human rights as historically understood by Civil Society.

BIOTECH INDUSTRY WANTS DEATHS DUE TO EXPERIMENTS KEPT SECRET

WASHINGTON, Nov 8 (LSN.ca) – Ronald Crystal, a prominent New York gene therapist, and Schering-Plough Corp. have requested that information on the death and illness of people subjected to controversial gene altering experiments be kept secret. The Washington Post reports that Crystal’s requests for secrecy submitted to the National Institutes of Health came just two weeks after a biotechnology company founded by Crystal filed for an initial public offering of stock.

While Crystal claims his patients’ deaths – now totaling four – were due to their medical conditions rather than his gene experiments, his requests for secrecy and those coming from other biotechnology companies have raised suspicions, especially in view of the fact, that it is (to quote the Post) “a field of medical research that has prided itself on openness.” Open reporting of the death and injury of patients involved in gene therapy has been accepted as a condition for allowing the radical alteration of human makeup through DNA-altering gene therapy. The Post describes gene therapy as “an experimental field in which genes are given to patients to correct inherited disorders and treat cancer.”

BLASPHEMOUS MOVIE “DOGMA” BEGINS FRIDAY

HOLLYWOOD, Nov 8 (LSN.ca) – The blasphemous Mirimax (a Disney subsidiary) film “Dogma” will splash across movie screens Friday hurling insults at Christ, Christians, Christianity in general, Catholicism in particular, and the pro-life movement. One of the film’s stars commented during production that the most controversial part of the film is the contention “that Mary and Joseph had sex and that they had a kid, and therefore there is a (relative) of Christ on Earth who is a girl, and she works at an abortion clinic.”

The film, by writer-director Kevin Smith, is geared for controversy. While some suggest picketing the film in protest, others have said that it is so poorly produced that it will draw very few numbers unless popularized by the anticipated controversy.

Over the past few months, a Catholic League petition demanding that Disney dump Miramax secured approximately 300,000 signatures. Last April, the Catholic League was delighted when Disney told Miramax not to release the movie. Miramax chiefs Bob and Harvey Weinstein, however, decided that their anti-religious agenda was too important to be abandoned so they invested $14 million of their own money to keep the film alive. Accordingly, the Catholic League embarked on a petition drive asking Disney to sever all relationships with Miramax.

CARDINAL APPROVES JUST DISCRIMINATION AGAINST PRACTICING HOMOSEXUALS

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Nov 8 (LSN.ca) – Cardinal Thomas Winning, the Scottish Catholic leader who made headlines recently for supporting a 12-year old in a crisis pregnancy, has again irked the anti-family forces. Responding to a Scottish government proposal to repeal a British law banning the promotion of homosexuality in schools, the cardinal said it is appropriate to discriminate against practicing homosexuals when it comes to the adoption of children, and the hiring of teachers, coaches and soldiers.

“While denouncing homosexual activity, the church also defends homosexual persons from those forms of discrimination which are unjust and seeks to help them find joy and peace living in the joy of chastity,” clarified the cardinal. “If we are not very, very careful, we will inadvertently promote a lifestyle for our children which will reduce their life expectancy, increase their chances of HIV infection and expose them to predatory and abusive relationships.”
