POLL: 84% OF AMERICAN VOTERS AGREE WITH DOUBLE HOMICIDE IN PETERSON CASE

WASHINGTON, April 29, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A national Fox News / Opinion Dynamics poll released April 25 found that 84% of registered voters agree that a double homicide charge is appropriate in the much-publicized Peterson murder case in California. Only 7% said that a one-victim charge would be appropriate.

The murder of Laci Peterson and her preborn baby has resulted in double murder charges against husband Scott Peterson. However, radical feminists with the National Organization of Women objected to the double murder charge saying Peterson should not be charged with murder in the death of the unborn child.

National Right to Life Committee commented that the poll speaks to the heart of the issue addressed by the Unborn Victims of Violence Act (S. 146), which would recognize as a legal victim any unborn child injured or killed during the commission of a federal crime. The bill has passed the House twice (in 1999 and 2001), but has never been taken up in the Senate because of opposition from NARAL and other groups that insist that these crimes have only one victim, not two.

Conducted April 22-23, 2003, the poll surveyed 900 registered voters asking: If Scott Peterson is convicted of killing his pregnant wife Laci, do you think he should be charged with one count of homicide for murdering his wife or two counts of homicide for murdering both his wife and unborn son?

PRI SAYS MORE WOMEN AIDS VICTIMS IN AFRICA BECAUSE OF INVASIVE SEXUAL HEALTH PROGRAMS

Population control programs indicted for devastation of African women by AIDS

FRONT ROYAL, Virginia, April 29, 2003 (pop.org/LifeSiteNews.com) – In Africa, nearly 6 out of 10 victims of HIV/AIDS are women. Why does the disease disproportionately strike African women? Because, say the gender feminists at the United Nations, they are powerless to refuse sex with HIV-positive men.

The Population Research Institute, in its April 29 Weekly Briefing, disagrees with this ideologically-motivated assessment. It believes that the targeting of women and girls for invasive contraceptive, sterilization and abortion procedures by so-called Sexual and Reproductive Health programs is largely responsible for AIDS among African women.

After examining the evidence, PRI concludes that women and girls account for such a high percentage of HIV/AIDS victims in Africa because they are infected during procedures designed to disable their reproductive systems and prevent them from conceiving or bearing children.

NOT ONE FEDERAL LIBERAL LEADERSHIP CANDIDATE OPPOSES HOMOSEXUAL ‘MARRIAGE’

OTTAWA, April 29, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – As the Ontario Court of Appeal continues its hearings on the homosexual ‘marriage’ challenge and the federal Justice committee winds up its consideration of the same subject, none of the three main contenders for the federal Liberal Leadership have come out in opposition to homosexual marriage.

Both Heritage Minister Sheila Copps and Finance Minister John Manley have endorsed homosexual ‘marriage’ but lead contender and former Finance Minister Paul Martin has said he is undecided on the issue but will not object to judicial decisions on the matter.

Martin, who political pundits suggest will most likely become the next Prime Minister, said in an interview on homosexual marriage, “It’s an issue I’m wrestling with, as I think are a great number of Canadians.” Martin did however say that he opposed forcing churches to sanction such ‘marriages’ and said he supported giving homosexual couples the same privileges as married couples. “I certainly do not believe that the state has the right to force churches to do anything,” Mr. Martin said. “But that the state should go for the Quebec option is certainly something that I think the government should consider.” In Quebec the state registers couples as partners but churches register marriages.

LEADING DNA SCIENTISTS ADMIT GOAL OF ENHANCING HUMANS THROUGH GENETICS

Nobel laureate James Watson says, “I don’t think there are any gods up there”

LONDON, April 29, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – At a recent celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA, leading DNA scientists from around the world candidly spoke about the eventuality of genetically advanced humans. Reporting on the event, the New Scientist, quotes Nobel-prize winning geneticist Sydney Brenner as saying current advancements in genetics will lead to “the birth of human sciences”.

Miro Radman, an expert on DNA repair at the Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale in France spoke positively about germ line modifications which would alter genes so that the alterations could be passed on to successive generations.

James Watson, one of the pair of scientists who discovered the double helix structure of DNA, spoke of the combining of psychology and biology as scientists learned which genes lead to different behaviours and emotions. Watson admitted the genetic enhancement of humans was ethically problematic for many but supported such controversial procedures nonetheless. “But I would use it wherever you could improve human life. I think we should be able to try and improve people’s minds,” he said. “I don’t see genetics as offending the gods, I don’t think there are any gods up there.”

U.S. SUPREME COURT ABSTAINS FROM ABORTION-RECORDS CASE

WASHINGTON, April 29, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The U.S. Supreme Court has
refused to rule on whether states should have the ability to research the previous medical records of women who want an abortion.

Pro-abortionists were trying to stop South Carolina state investigators from being able to copy the medical records without a guarantee of “confidentiality.” The pro-abortionists’ lawyers claimed they fear that private records will be “leaked” to pro-lifers. But state lawyers argued that there is no basis for believing that routine medical records would be
disclosed — and that therefore the Supreme Court need not get involved. The high court agreed.

HUNGARY’S TOP COURT REJECTS ASSISTED SUICIDE

BUDAPEST, April 29, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Hungary’s constitutional court has rejected a bid to legalize assisted suicide, on grounds that terminally ill patients can already refuse medical care, under the country’s so-called “passive euthanasia” laws, if they wish.

“The current state of affairs is not unconstitutional,” said presiding judge Janos Nemeth. “We have considered international examples and euthanasia has only been made legal recently in Belgium, in the Netherlands and in a state in the United States [Oregon].” He said the foreign examples did not make a convincing case for adopting the practice in Hungary.

SWISS BISHOPS SUCCEED IN GETTING ANTI-CATHOLIC ADS PULLED

BERN, April 29, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – An anti-HIV/AIDS advertising campaign in Switzerland that uses anti-Catholic messaging has been shelved, apparently out of respect for the country’s 3.3 million Catholics, almost half of the 7.3 million population. According to government spokesmen, the objections of Catholic bishops influenced the decision to pull the ads.

One poster in German said: “Dear Father, if Rome doesn’t want you to talk about contraception, then talk about condoms instead.”

A spokesman said cryptically, “We had intensive talks with the Bishop’s conference, and agreed to drop that part of the campaign because we had used the word Rome rather than Vatican. … It was never our intention to attack Rome, the Vatican or the Church, or to hurt religious feelings.”
