HAMILTON CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE ON THE MARCH OF WOMEN

Bishop Reaffirms Support for CWL’s Position Against March

HAMILTON, May 30 (LSN.ca) – A resolution on the March of Women 2000 was overwhelmingly passed at the 80th Convention of the Hamilton Diocesan Council of the Catholic Women’s League on Saturday May 28th 2000. The diocese has 12,500 of the 105,000 members of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada. The resolution called for the National Council of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada to “issue a public statement of withdrawal of its support and endorsement of the World March of Women 2000.”

At the Hamilton CWL dinner on Sunday evening Bishop Anthony Tonnos of Hamilton reaffirmed his support for the position of the diocesan CWL against the march.

After mentioning its commitment to fighting poverty and violence the resolution points out that the CWL policy manual actually forbids the CWL from taking part in the march. It also points out the problems associated with the march regarding abortion, homosexuality, education, and support for controversial UN treaties.

CANADIAN PROFESSOR CANNED FOR BEING NON-FEMINIST

WINNIPEG, May 30 (LSN.ca) – Dr. Henry Makow, PhD, 50, a former lecturer in the English department at the University of Winnipeg, has filed a complaint with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission alleging discrimination on the basis of his political beliefs, and his sexual orientation. He is heterosexual. Dr. Makow, the inventor of the popular board game Scruples, has been let go by the University of Winnipeg over being a “non-feminist.” University President Constance Rooke, told him he was “anti feminist” and that “anti feminists are anti-women.” Dr. Rooke informed Dr. Makow that his teaching services would not be retained next year. When Dr. Makow objected, raising the issue of academic freedom, Rooke scoffed: “We let you finish teaching the year, didn’t we?”

Dr. Makow’s punishment stems from complaints raised by four students in one of his two classes. In an anonymous letter, the four students told Dr. Makow that, “we have sensed your strong feeling that women should be submissive and docile.” The feminists at the college became enraged because he expressed the view: “I don’t believe being wives and mothers has oppressed women. They have been selected by nature for a task which is far more important than anything men do. It’s time society, stopped devaluing the role of wife, mother, and homemaker.” Dr. Makow believes that “a woman who puts husband and children before herself brings love into the world. More than any other, this is the way love is born.”

The university took drastic action upon receipt of the letter despite the fact that the complaint was not even formal. Dr. Makow informed LifeSite that there was no investigation to determine whether the letter had any merit. When he responded that he had been misrepresented he was ignored, as were letters of support for his fairness submitted by other students and Dr. Makow’s submission indicating support for his position in course materials. As well as deciding to release Dr. Makow from his teaching responsibilities the following year, the university decided another professor should grade the final papers and exams of the letter writers. The university gave them permission to cut his classes and even discussed providing these students with tutors.

Dr. Makow told LifeSite that the action was taken since the complaining students felt “uncomfortable,” although radical feminist professors were not disciplined at all even though they would not give a passing grade to dissenting students. He provided the administration with proof that he had given A’s to feminists. He lamented that the “university turns out women who hate men.” He said that the radical feminists “have turned the university into an agency for their twisted social agenda.”

LIBERAL GOVERNMENT DONATES $10K TO PORNOGRAPHIC FESTIVAL

MONTREAL, May 30 (LSN.ca) – LifeSite has discovered that Sheila Copps, the federal Minister of Canadian Heritage has given 10,000 taxpayer dollars to the 2000 edition of the Montreal Fringe Festival to take place from June 9 to 18, in Montreal. The scandal of such frivolous use of public monies is compounded by the fact that the festival is pornographic and attacks traditional sensibilities.

The festival productions include: Burning Sensation, a telethon for crotch rot, with Bob Loblaw June 11 P.S. 69 – a “tale of a New York City public school substitute teacher/exotic dancer” SMACKED..GRASSED..CRACKED which offers discounts to “queens in drag” (and other descriptions too rude for mention) and which restricts attendance to exclude, “UNCOOL, ignorant bastards, beaches + gaybashers.”

SCIENTISTS REJECT GLOBAL WARMING THEORY

WASHINGTON, May 30 (LSN.ca) – Scientists from around the world converged in Washington today for a one-day conference on global warming science. Climate experts including Dr. Vincent Gray of New Zealand, Dr. Paal Brekke of Norway, Mr. Richard Courtney of the United Kingdom, Dr. Ross McKitrick of Canada and Dr. Wibjorn Karlen of Sweden questioned the assumptions of, and exposed the flaws inherent in, the science underlying much of the current policy debate over global climate change.

Conservative News Service reports that the Cooler Heads Coalition, as the group calls itself, is ready to make its case before Congress and refute the conclusions of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and its Third Assessment Report which predict dire consequences based on global warming theory. The scientists explain that the IPCC documents are motivated by political expediency rather than scientific fact.

They criticized the Kyoto treaty as reactionary and warned that it will do more harm than good. CNS notes that opponents of Kyoto note that it will cost Americans as much as $30K per family in lost income and be responsible for the loss of up to 2 million jobs a year.
