The legal landscape of abortion in post-Roe America is likely to shift dramatically in the coming weeks as more pro-life laws take effect, Republican lawmakers pass additional protections, and Democrats move to expand abortion access in the states that they control. Check the map and the guide for the latest updates.
As of Wednesday, laws in eight states are now in effect prohibiting abortion throughout pregnancy. Similar bans are currently held up in court in six other states.
Fetal heartbeat laws have also come into effect in four states, banning abortion after around six weeks of pregnancy, and another may soon be enforceable in Iowa.
Florida, Indiana, and Kentucky, meanwhile, have moved to enforce new abortion restrictions in the second trimester of pregnancy that were previously impossible under the Roe framework.
In the remaining states, abortion remains legal on demand for any reason until at least 20 weeks, and most allow abortion up to the moment of birth under loose “health” exceptions. Several even continue to permit elective abortion throughout pregnancy, making American one of just a few nations in the world with unrestricted late-term abortion within its borders.
