ANGELA BISSONNETTE UPDATE Today is Day +11 from the Bone Marrow Transplant, and for the past 10 days Angela has been doing wonderfully. Now however, she is again having a hard time. Most of her hair has fallen out and what remains will be gone in a day or two.

Angela has developed Graft Vs Host Disease (GVHD) today. Her own bone marrow was eradicated by the chemo and then replaced in the transplant by her sister Marie Claire’s bone marrow. Though the two were a perfect tissue match they are not genetically identical and so the imported bone marrow is attacking Angela’s body as foreign. At 3:00 pm she began to have blotches on her arms and cheeks, and by 4:00 pm the top of her face extending below her eyes was almost purple and she was gasping. The doctor watched her closely but did not want to begin steroid treatment as this would arrest the engraftment of the bone marrow. By 5:00 the crisis had passed, though the doctor said it could and would reoccur. Her Red cell, White Cell and Platelet counts are all beginning to rise and this is very good news. Donations to assist the family with extra expenses may be sent to Campaign Life Coalition, 104 Bond St., Toronto, ON M5B 1X9. Make cheques payable to Campaign Life Coalition and mark them for the Angela Bissonnette fund.
