(LifeSiteNews) — On January 24, 2023, Lindsay Clancy strangled her three children – ages 3, 5, and 8 months – with exercise bands. She then slit her wrists and threw herself out of a window.
Hitherto, horrific killings like this have shocked all societies at all times in history. But in America today, there is a new and disturbing evil at work: choosing to sympathize more with the murderer than with the dead children.
Clancy’s recent trial brought forth an outpouring of support for the killer, who too often minimized or ignored the violent deaths of her innocent children.
A future court will determine whether Clancy had the mental capacity to commit murder, but the response to the case has made one thing terrifyingly clear. Many in our society have lost the capacity to experience empathy for innocent children. They instinctively consider the rights and well-being of vulnerable children secondary to the perceived needs of an adult woman.
This is the bitter fruit of decades of legalized abortion.
For decades, women have been told they can kill their unborn children in the womb. Now the killings of born children have begun.
The movement for Clancy has already been linked to a number of copycat killings. Prosecutors have alleged that Corrie Walsh, a mother in Illinois, killed her 2-year-old son after she became “very invested in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial.” Walsh had been “actively discussing the case” in a group chat just 3 1/2 hours before her son was found hanged in the basement.
On August 6, Kailey Erhart allegedly stabbed her three children, two of whom died after being taken to a hospital. Video obtained from her husband’s phone reportedly shows Erhart holding a pistol and one of her children, telling him to “say goodbye to your kids.”
These deaths are shocking, but they are not inexplicable. They are the result of a society that has forgotten God. And many more children are likely to be killed unless we confront the roots of the problem.
LifeSiteNews readers know that every child is created in the image and likeness of God. But too many adults think of children as commodities, even accessories, or annoying byproducts of sexual congress, not as gifts.
We wrote earlier this year about Preston Davey, a 13-month-old boy who was murdered by his homosexual “father.” The police officer who led the investigation said Preston was treated like a “fashion accessory” and as part of the “Instagram-ready” lifestyle of his homosexual “parents.” Meanwhile, behind closed doors, they subjected him to months of sickening sexual, physical, and emotional abuse that led to his death.
What is happening today is the culmination of decades of commodification of children. Again and again, the desires of adults are put first, and the needs of children put second. This is the opposite of how a civilization thrives.
