BOSTON, Sept 8 (LSN) – Richard Seed, the Chicago physicist who gained notoriety in January by proposing to start cloning humans for profit, announced last week that he would begin by cloning himself. His wife Gloria has agreed to carry the cloned baby of her husband, according to the Associated Press. Although dismissed by many people as mad, Seed’s Ph.D. from Harvard and his claims of a “team” of doctors willing to assist him make his threat to begin cloning humans a real danger.  Seed has readily accepted charges of craziness. “When I was seven years old I was brilliant and crazy …  I don’t mind being called crazy,” he told reporters earlier this year. Responding to critics charging he wanted to play God, Seed said: “God made man in His own image. God intended for man to become one with God. … Cloning and the reprogramming of DNA is the first serious step in becoming one with God.”  Seed vowed to open a clinic in Mexico or some other location abroad if he is shut out of the US. This situation increases the pressure on both Canada and the US to enact cloning bans. Until recently, the issue has generally been dismissed as “science fiction” and, therefore, unnecessary to address.
