TORONTO, Feb 23, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Catholic Insight magazine, March edition, is calling for the excommunication of federal Health Minister Allan Rock by the Catholic Church. “Politically, Catholics like Rock do as they please,” the magazine says; “it’s about time the Church do as she must.”  The magazine points out that Catholics who directly participate in causing an abortion, are excommunicated automatically. All others commit lesser sins according to the extent and degree of their participation. The latter is called “material cooperation.” Catholic Insight insists that Rock, a Catholic, “has reached the highest degree of material cooperation” since he not only approves of abortion but “also legislates to make it as widely available as possible.”

The Second Vatican Council called the killing of the unborn “an unspeakable crime.” The Church, the magazine says, “should excommunicate Rock for the common good, and for the good of his own soul – as he will hopefully be called back to his faith.” Catholic Insight editor, Fr. Alphonse de Valk says, “the time has come to deal with those who publicly cross the line and thereby mock God’s teaching.” It is not a question of the Catholic Church meddling in politics, explains Fr.de Valk but of the Church excommunication a Catholic politician who publicly thwarts God’s law.
