TORONTO, June 5 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Catholic Insight magazine, a monthly magazine of religion, culture and politics based in Toronto, is calling for Catholic voters to abandon the Liberal party and join the Canadian Alliance. “It’s change-over time for all Catholics,” the June 2000 editorial states.  “Many (Catholics) have clung for years to parties and Prime Ministers unwilling to defend the family, or preserve life, or defend the rights of Christians to have a voice in the public forum,”  says the magazine. It cites the April passage of Bill C-23 “providing equality of financial status for homosexual unions” as a recent example of the Liberal betrayal of the family. “Now is the time to change,” the editor, Alphonse de Valk, states. “Buy yourself a membership and vote for one of the two known pro-life candidates in the Alliance.”

Although the June editorial does not name these two candidates, in an earlier, March, editorial,  the editor had made it clear that he doesn’t consider Tom Long to be representative of social conservatism. That leaves only Preston Manning and Stockwell Day because the fourth candidate,  Keith Martin, is pro-abortion. The magazine quotes Pope John Paul II speaking to European parliamentarians in 1997: “Christians involved in public affairs should always be faithful to Christ.” The magazine’s call for Catholics to leave the Liberal Party coincides with the recent public protest against Prime Minister Jean Chretien and the Liberal Party by Ottawa Archbishop   Marcel Gervais for being pro-abortion. Of the Gervais homily, the magazine states, “no Canadian bishop has publicly criticized a Prime Minister by name in recent memory.”
