WASHINGTON, May 16, 2001 (LSN.ca) – A new Zogby America poll has found that a majority (62%) of Americans say they would support federal legislation requiring all welfare recipients to use birth control as a condition of their public benefit eligibility. The March 2001 survey of 1,000 likely voters nationwide, also showed 33% would oppose any such mandate, while another 5% are not sure.

Interestingly Democrats (58% support, 38% oppose) are less supportive of such a mandate than Republicans (66% support, 29% oppose) or Independents (63% support, 32% oppose). There was a noted difference in support of the measure between Catholics (55% support, 40% oppose) and Protestants (68% support, 27% oppose). Moreover, older respondents, including those over 65, support such mandates (68% support, 21% oppose) in higher numbers than younger respondents, including those 18-29 (60% support, 38% oppose) and those 30-49 (61% support, 38% oppose).
