A 48-year-old Moroccan man living in Italy has been arrested after allegedly locking his wife in their apartment, beating her, and starving her in an attempt to kill their unborn child, according to Italian media reports.

The 30-year-old woman, who is two months pregnant, was reportedly rescued after her uncle became concerned that he could not reach her by cell phone, which her husband had taken away.  Knowing the couple had been fighting, he went to their apartment to check on them and realized his niece was locked inside without a phone or a way out.  He immediately called the police.

When police arrived, they waited for her husband to return and ordered him to open the door.  As soon as they entered the residence, the woman burst into tears.  She told police her husband had been abusive toward her for years, but that things had recently taken a turn for the worse when she discovered she was pregnant with their second child.  She said her husband did not want her to have the baby, and when she refused to get an abortion, he held her captive in the apartment, withheld food, and beat her repeatedly in an attempt to force a miscarriage.

The man is now being held at the Dozza jail in Bologna, facing charges of abuse and kidnapping. Neither the husband’s nor the wife’s names have been released to the public.
