WINNIPEG, June 11, 2002 (LSN.ca) – The NDP government in Manitoba introduced omnibus legislation last Thursday that would amend 56 provincial acts to favour homosexual couples.  Attorney General Gord Mackintosh explained that the legislation would bring the province in line with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  The bill allows for joint adoption of children by homosexual couples, whereas currently only sole parent adoptions are legally recognized for homosexual couples.  The key changes were recommended in December 2001 by the Common-law Relationships Review Panel made up of retired associate chief justice Alvin Hamilton and Winnipeg family law lawyer Jennifer Cooper.  The Manitoba government is drafting legislation to deal with property rights for homosexual couples which it will introduce in the coming weeks.  See the government release on the legislation:  https://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/press/top/2002/06/2002-06-06-04.html
