OTTAWA, Ontario, May 2, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) – If there’s one thing Jason Evert knows, it’s that young people aren’t really looking for condoms and chemicals so they can have “safe sex” without contracting a disease or becoming pregnant. What they’re really looking for is true love.

“They’re made for love, that’s what they want. The problem is they just don’t know how to find it,” said Evert, a popular chastity speaker for 15 years and best selling author of Theology of the Body for Teens, in an interview with LifeSiteNews.

Evert took issue with Ottawa’s “Sex It Smart” condom campaign launched last year, which offers young people access to free condoms throughout the city so they can consume ‘safe sex’ wherever and whenever they want. He said that such programs are not only misleading, but they promote the very thing that leads women to abortion.

“It’s physiologically false to call sex ‘safe’ because you’re using a condom. The most commonly transmitted sexually transmitted disease is called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). It’s clearly demonstrated in the medical literature that the condom is not very effective at all in preventing this. HPV has killed more women than AIDS has because it can cause cervical cancer,” he said.

Evert called condoms-failing-to-prevent-HPV the “Achilles heel” of the entire “safe sex” program.

Evert also linked “safe” sex ed, with its emphasis on no strings attached self-gratification, to an increase in promiscuity, resulting in more pregnancies, leading to more abortions.

“Planned Parenthood admits that most high school pregnancies are caused by contraceptive failure, not by the failure to use contraceptives. It’s also true that most women who receive abortions were using birth control the month they became pregnant. So, how will a greater availability of contraception lead to a decrease in abortions? It won’t.”

Even the “Sex It Smart” condom activists see the link between “safe sex” and abortion, listing as a resource on their website Ottawa’s Planned Parenthood abortion clinic.

“Because of widespread contraception, more people than ever are having intercourse without expecting to become pregnant. Because they have already set their wills against life by contracepting, they often resort to abortion when they ‘accidentally’ conceive,” he said.

Evert said he did years of crisis pregnancy counseling before becoming a chastity speaker and always felt that his efforts were late.

“I always wondered, ‘why am I meeting these women 45 minutes before their abortion? Why can’t I meet these women when they’re sophomores in high school? Why can’t I meet them when they’re sophomores in college?” he asked. “Maybe if they heard the message of chastity then, they would have never dated this guy in the first place. After all, 84 percent of women who receive an abortion are not married to the father of the child.’”

Evert and his wife Crystalina have traveled around the world sharing the message that chastity can change one’s life for the better. The couple are frequent guests on radio and television, appearing on MSNBC, Fox News, the BBC, and EWTN.

Their website, ChastityProject.com, covers hot topics such as dating, setting physical limits in dating, pornography, homosexuality, birth control, STDS, starting over, how to stay pure, vocations and spirituality.

Evert just released his new book titled Saint John Paul the Great: His Five Loves.

Evert said that practicing true chastity is not something negative that hinders happiness, but in fact, something positive that helps one to love with all one’s heart.

“Young people today are tired of divorce. They’re thirsting and longing for love,” he said. “They want to know the truth. They want to understand the meaning of their life. And chastity is a virtue that in a way offers them all these things – authentic love.”

“They’re hungry for this. The job of a chastity speaker isn’t to shame teens, offer them a guilt trip, or scare them into abstinence by means of statistics. Their hearts are made for love,” he said. “And chastity is a virtue that frees you to love because you’re not controlled by your hormones,. It also frees you to know if you are being loved. Many young women wonder: ‘Does he really love me? He says he does, but is he just giving me love for the sake of getting sex?’”

“Chastity cuts through all the manipulation and mind games so the girl knows: ‘Does the guy really want me, or does he want the pleasure he gets at my expense?'” he stated.

Evert sees that being pro-life is much more than defending babies from abortion, but it is defending love itself.

“You cannot truly promote the pro-life cause without promoting the pro-love cause. You can’t have respect for human life without having respect for human love,” he added. “Chastity is so important in defending human life because if you can teach people the proper use of love and sexuality, then abortion becomes a moot point.”
