(LifeSiteNews) – People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier blasted newly-elected Conservative Party (CPC) leader Pierre Poilievre for painting himself as anti-COVID mandate despite pushing the vaccines throughout the so-called pandemic.

“Pierre Poilievre still claims he opposed covid mandates from the beginning. That’s a lie,” Bernier wrote to his large Twitter following on Monday.

Last year he agreed with the idea that we had to be jabbed or else confined. He was only criticizing Trudeau for not getting more Canadians vaccinated fast enough,” the politician added.

Accompanying the harshly worded tweet, Bernier attached a video from 2021 showing Poilievre in parliament criticizing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau not for pushing the experimental COVID jab on Canadians but for failing to procure a sufficient number of doses resulting in low vaccine uptake compared with other countries.

“What we need is vaccines, that was the one job he [Trudeau] had at this point in the crisis,”  Poilievre remarked at the time.

“The reality is the rest of the world was being vaccinated in January and February. Vaccination rates in the U.S. and U.K. are twice what they are here in Canada,” he lamented. “The rest of the world is reopening while we are being confined to our basements because of the wave of the variants that this prime minister allowed … ”

While Bernier’s statement drew a mixed reaction, many did agree that Poilievre’s support of the novel injections and silence on government mandates for the majority of the COVID era has impacted their ability to trust him as the CPC’s new leader.

As reported by LifeSiteNews, while Poilievre won the CPC leadership race with a whopping 68 percent of the vote on Saturday, pro-life candidate MP Leslyn Lewis placed third with nearly 10 percent of the vote, suggesting social conservatism is still relatively popular within the party.

Responding to Poilievre’s election, Jack Fonseca, director of political operations for Campaign Life Coalition, highlighted the importance of ensuring the new leader remembers past promises he has made to pro-life Canadians.

“It’s praiseworthy that Poilievre has promised to support pregnant women, providing them with resources to make choices other than abortion. A national awareness campaign by a Conservative government to promote the choice of adoption would save many lives. While Trudeau has vowed to strip our country’s pregnancy resource centers of their charitable status, Mr. Poilievre has promised to stand up for such centers.”
