OTTAWA (LifeSiteNews) – Maxime Bernier, leader of the People’s Party of Canada, said it’s no accident Freedom Convoy leader Tamara Lich is still behind bars, saying it’s because she is a “political” prisoner.
“Tamara she’s in jail today … She’s under political repression,” Bernier said while speaking to a crowd of supporters earlier this month in Ottawa.
“For what? For nothing.”
Bernier recounted how he spent 12 hours in jail last year for going against COVID rules, which he said is nothing compared with what Lich has had to endure.
“It’s not our country. That’s political repression. I can tell you she will win, she’ will win that because we are behind her,” Bernier said.
Bernier added that his message is to “be resilient, celebrate our country, celebrate our way of life, knowing that it will be tough.”
“But knowing that when you do what you believe, when you work for yourselves and for your family and for your community, we will be able to do that common-sense revolution together,” he added.
As for Lich, she is back in court for a bail hearing where a judge will determine to release her or send her into custody.
In early July, Justice of the Peace Paul Harris denied Lich bail, saying, “Your detention is necessary to maintain confidence in the administration of justice.”
Lich was arrested on June 27 in her hometown of Medicine Hat, Alberta for a second time. Her second arrest came after she allegedly violated her bail conditions.
The crown argued in a daylong hearing in early July that Lich violated her bail conditions by having a photo taken with another person associated with the Freedom Convoy at the annual George Jonas Freedom Award from the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) last month in Toronto.
Lich was recently in Toronto to accept the annual George Jonas Freedom Award from the JCCF.
Bernier rips Pierre Poilievre for non-answer regarding jailing of Lich
Bernier today ripped Conservative Party of Canada MP and leadership candidate frontrunner Pierre Poilievre for giving a weak answer in support of Lich.
A few days ago, asked about Lich and what he would do to make sure Canada does not jail political prisoners, Poilievre said, “As a prime minister, I will not control who goes to prison.”
Bernier took to Twitter last week to state what his answer to the question would be.
“Trudeau demonized the Convoy. He illegally invoked the Emergency Act and froze bank accounts. He’s weaponized the police and justice system. This needs to be reversed to ensure we don’t have more political prisoners like Tamara in Canada,” Bernier wrote.
Bernier recently blasted the late-term killing of unborn babies as “abhorrent,” saying the time is right for a debate on abortion in Canada.
As for Poilievre, he is pro-abortion. Last year, he voted against a bill that would have banned sex-selective abortion in Canada.
Bernier, who chose not to get the COVID jabs, is currently challenging Canada’s injection travel mandate in court.
Lich was first arrested on February 17, only two days after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau enacted the Emergencies Act (EA), which he claimed was needed to deal with Freedom Convoy protesters who were demanding an end to all COVID mandates.
Trudeau revoked the EA on February 23.
