GERMANTOWN, MD, February 8, 2013, (LifeSiteNews.com) – Leroy Carhart is one of the best-known abortionists in the world. Just last month he was lauded as a star at the Sundance Film Festival before the release of After Tiller, a documentary about the four abortionists in the U.S. who publicly admit to performing late-term abortions.
But now a woman has died under his care.
News of the 29-year-old woman’s death after a late-term (33 week) abortion at Carhart’s Maryland abortion facility is already ricocheting around the pro-life and conservative world, but as of 6:00 p.m. EST Friday, not through the help of a single mainstream news outlet.
Troy Newman, the president of Operation Rescue, the pro-life group that broke the news of the death, says he believes it is “typical” of the mainstream media that they are reticent to do “due diligence” to investigate the story and report on it.
“It’s because they’re pro-abortion,” Newman told LifeSiteNews.com in a telephone interview. “And bad news for the abortion industry is bad news for them. They’ll only report it when they’re forced to.”
Newman said that with conservative news sites and in the blogosphere reporting on the story, the mainstream press is being placed in a “pressure cooker” to follow suit.
That pressure was turned up this afternoon when the high-traffic Drudge Report featured the story prominently, linking to a blog post on the Susan B Anthony List website.

In a press release this morning, Operation Rescue said it learned about the death through what it calls an “extremely credible” anonymous source.
While Newman says he understands that the larger outlets like the Associated Press will want to confirm the death independently, he said it only took him a single phone call to the medical examiner to confirm what he had learned from Operation Rescue’s source: that a woman had died in Shady Grove Hospital Thursday as a result of an abortion.
According to Operation Rescue, the abortion patient, who was 33-weeks pregnant, suffered massive internal bleeding into her abdominal cavity. She slipped into a Code Blue condition approximately six times before finally succumbing to her injuries at around 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Newman said that the woman’s death is clearly newsworthy “because the whole proposition of the left is that abortions should be safe, legal and are. We know that they’re not rare, and we know that they’re not safe, for the baby or for the mom.”
“Additionally this is one of our strong suits. Ninety percent of the American people disagree with late-term abortions. This woman was 33-weeks pregnant. This is horrific. Horrific,” he said. “And the media don’t want to report this, because they know 90 percent of people are against this.”
Newman said that for the Left, Carhart is a “sacred cow.”
Pro-life activists are planning a prayer vigil and press conference outside Carhart’s abortion facility on Monday at 9 a.m.
This is not the first time that Carhart has been involved in the death of a client. In 2006, Christin Gilbert, a disabled woman, died during a third-trimester abortion under Carhart’s care in Wichita, Kansas.
