HOLLYWOOD, Mar 15, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Researchers are blaming the promotion of homosexuality in popular TV shows for massive increases in the practice of homosexual sex among Americans. A national survey, the results of which are published in the current Journal of Sex Research, found that homosexual sex acts among women had increased 15-fold from 0.2% in 1988 to nearly 3% in 1998. Over the same period, the homosexual sex among men doubled from 2% to 4%.

Homosexual activist groups agreed that the TV and film promotion boosted their cause. Cathy Renna, of Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) told Reuters, “Having a show like ‘Will and Grace,’ ‘If These Walls Could Talk 2,’ or (other) films that are out there—that’s a way to really reach people in an accessible, non-threatening way.”

The study by Amy C. Butler of the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, examined 1988-1998 data from the General Social Survey, a poll of adult Americans over the age of 18 conducted every two years by the National Opinion Research Center. Interestingly the study demonstrates again the falsehood promoted by advocates of homosexuality that 10% of the population is homosexual. In fact, Butler suggests that the number of 3 to 4% in her study might be an unduly high estimate of homosexuality since she says some people may experiment with same-gender sex but still identify themselves as heterosexual.
