DUNCAN, OK, August 21, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The disregard for life created by abortion affects wider society by triggering events like the senseless shooting of Christopher Lane, according to a television medical expert.

Chris Lane, a 22-year-old Australian native, was shot while jogging through Duncan, Oklahoma. Authorities have charged three teens for the crime: Chancey Luna, 16; Michael Jones, 17; and James Edwards Jr., 15.

Jones allegedly told police, “We were bored and didn't have anything to do, so we decided to kill somebody.”

Dr. Keith Ablow told Fox News that the nation has long been “cheapening life in general.”

“If you can't outlaw third trimester abortions in every state, you have an answer to why people don't take life seriously,” he said.

Americans, he said, suffer from an “epic of disconnectedness,” embodied by anonymous Facebook friends, and that has led people to view other human beings as disposable.

The psychiatric expert's observation is far from unique. The pro-life movement has consistently maintained that indifference to the welfare of the unborn creates a slippery slope where all life is devalued.

Others have also connected this to gang violence. In response to a caller's question last year, Rush Limbaugh said abortion had made us “insensitive to killing.”

This summer, the talk radio giant reiterated that abortion is “at the root of our cultural decay.”

Accounts of Lane's murder have sent shockwaves throughout the country for its cold-blooded calculation and media double standard. On his program today, Limbaugh asked why the media have not reported on the killing with the same intensity as the Trayvon Martin shooting.

The three young suspects in the Oklahoma murder will be tried as adults. If convicted, Luna and Edwards face life in prison.
