(LifeSiteNews) — An archdiocese in Mexico published an editorial calling on authorities to establish mechanisms to provide for the dignified burial of aborted or unclaimed infants.

“In Mexico, it is not uncommon to encounter cases where the bodies of late-term fetuses or newborns are abandoned in public spaces, at hospitals, or even among the trash,” the Primatial Archdiocese of Mexico noted.

“We therefore call upon health, forensic, and local government authorities to establish mechanisms that — once all relevant legal and forensic procedures have been completed — allow for the release of the bodies or remains of unclaimed infants to duly accredited institutions and associations willing to provide them with a burial,” the archdiocese urged. “We recognize that the human body, after death, must be treated with respect, in recognition of its inherent human dignity.”

“It would also be valuable to have spaces dedicated specifically to these little ones — places where babies whose families could not bury them, or whose bodies were never claimed, might find their final rest,” it continued. “Such a site could also become a place of remembrance, prayer, and solace for the many mothers, fathers, and families who have endured a loss they often bear in silence.”

“From the perspective of our faith, we affirm that the dignity of every person begins at conception; yet even those who do not share our faith can acknowledge that death does not turn a body into mere waste,” the archdiocese pointed out.

“No matter how small, how brief their time in this world, or how difficult the circumstances of their death, they deserve respect and dignity,” it declared.
