Mexico’s Ruling Party Seeks Supreme Court Decision against Gay “Marriage”

MEXICO CITY, January 27, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Mexico’s ruling National Action Party (PAN) is beginning new initiatives against the legalization of “gay marriage” and homosexual adoption in the nation’s capital.
The PAN, which is a minority party in the government of Mexico City, is seeking to file suit in the nation’s Supreme Court of Justice along with members of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), to overturn the recently passed legislation. It needs 22 members of the city’s legislature to initiate the process.
In addition, the PAN is seeking to include the nation’s Attorney General’s office and the National Human Rights Commission in the motion.
In a widely-publicized poll recently conducted by the PAN, 53% of Mexico City residents expressed their opposition to “homosexual marriage,” while 46% were in favor.
The results were even more strongly against adoption of children by homosexuals: 76% were opposed, while only 22% were in favor.
The politics of Mexico City differ radically from the general political tendencies of the country. The socialist Party of the Democratic Revolution in the capital holds a majority with other smaller socialist parties. In most states, however, the PRD is a minority party, and the liberal PRI and conservative PAN predominate.
The PRD in Mexico City has also legalized abortion on demand, which is paid for by the government, during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy, and has created a system of “express divorce.”
The state governments have responded with a wave of pro-life constitutional amendments, to prevent similar changes to their own laws.
