LANSING, Mich., July 6 (LSN) – Last Thursday, the Michigan legislature approved a measure to ban assisted suicide. Since it has already been passed by the Senate, it is scheduled to take effect September 1, pending the signature of Gov. John Engler. Engler, who helped negotiate the bill’s passage, said that the measure “ought to put Jack Kevorkian out of business and end that sorry spectacle that’s been playing out these many years.” Under the new law assisted suicide is a five-year felony with a $10,000 fine. However the battle against euthanasia is far from over in Michigan. A pro-euthanasia group known as Merian’s Friends has waged a successful campaign to put the matter to a referendum in the November 3 elections.
