LANSING, September 10, 2002 (LSN.ca) – The Michigan Catholic Conference announced yesterday that a Catholic voters guide identifying abortion as the primary issue in voting was distributed to all 804 Catholic parishes in the state.  “The statement is designed to serve as an educational tool for Catholic voters in Michigan,” said Sister Monica Kostielney, President and CEO of the MCC.

The guide called “A Catholic View to Election 2002” says, “The Gospel of Life affirms that while the rights of the human person are championed and the value of life publicly declared, the most basic right, ‘the right to life,’ is being denied or trampled upon. It continues, “Respect for the dignity of the human person demands a commitment to human rights across a broad spectrum … Abortion is the preeminent threat to human dignity because it directly attacks life itself, the most fundamental human good and the condition for all others.”“There’s no ambiguity in this statement,” said Kostielney, “no wiggle room, certainly and especially in regards to the life issues.” Kostielney added, “Catholic voters—and candidates—are called upon to be consistent in their defense of life, from the first moment of conception to the last natural breath.”  The Michigan Catholic Conference is the public policy voice for the Catholic Church in this state. It has a 14 member Board comprised of the seven Diocesan bishops, five lay members, one priest and one religious sister. Adam Cardinal Maida, Archbishop of Detroit, is the Chairman of the Board.
