In a bold move, a Michigan judge has stopped the parents of a 12-year-old incest victim from bringing the girl across state lines to have an abortion. According to state prosecuters, the girl is not convinced that she wants the abortion and has not been fully informed of her options. As a result, they fear she could suffer serious psychological consequences if she is forced to have her child killed. There are also serious physical implications. The delay has been ordered so the girl can undergo psychological testing. She was made pregnant by her brother. The girl is in her 28th week of pregnancy and Michigan law does not permit abortions beyond 24 weeks unless the life of the mother is said to be at risk. In this case, there is no evidence of a risk. Pro- lifers argue that abortion in such cases simply adds a second devasting trauma, thereby compounding the rape/incest experience with yet more violence. Research shows that even after having worked through the pain of incest or rape, women continue feeling anguish in relation to abortions procured as a result of such violations.
