KANSAS CITY, Mo, May 4, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Two lesbian Kansas City women, told they could not adopt children because of their homosexual lifestyle, are suing the state with the help of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Lisa Johnston and Dawn Roginski were denied the right to adopt a child by Missouri Department of Social Services who acted according to state policy. The pair argue that they are eminently qualified – Johnston being an early childhood education specialist, while Roginski is a chaplain and youth counsellor.
DSS spokesman Chris Whitley said it is an established practice of the organization to not “knowingly license as a foster parent any person who declares themself to be a homosexual.” Kansascity.com also reported that DSS representatives told Johnston and Roginski they are not of reputable character because of Missouri’s law prohibiting sodomy.
“This is really not about the rights of the individuals who want to parent,” said Family Research Council senior director of policy studies Peter Sprigg. “The purpose of this system is to serve the best interests of the child.”
