WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — First Lady Melania Trump delivered a beautiful message ahead of Mother’s Day praising motherhood and “the miracle of life,” yet her words stand in stark contrast to her previous declarations affirming every woman’s right to have abortions.

Melania Trump can’t have it both ways. One can’t praise the “miracle of life” and defend the “right to choose.” Which is it?

“A mother is awestruck when she welcomes her child into the world,” said the First Lady, speaking at a White House tribute to military mothers on Wednesday.

“After nine months, the miracle of life creates a fascinating bond between mother and child,” Mrs. Trump said. “With each breath, day by day, this bond deepens, bringing forth emotions never felt before.”

“Quite frankly, these are emotions understood only by women,” she said. “Only a mother can carry this type of powerful connection with her child, which is also too profound for words.”

With President Trump at her side, she continued:

At the very heart of America’s strength lies the boundless love and quiet power of mothers. We are the most devoted teachers — gently nurturing empathy, inspiring dreams, and guiding our children towards goodness. We help them rise with courage when life grows difficult. In every hug, every story read at bedtime, and every sacrifice made without complaint, mothers build the moral foundation of our families.

Mrs. Trump’s description of moms’ “boundless love and quiet power” helping their children “rise with courage when life grows difficult” jarringly belies her allegiance to abortion “rights.”

“How can the First Lady support abortion, after saying these words?” wondered Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action.

“Babies deserve to live, not to be destroyed,” Rose said.

“Or surrogacy,” added Josh Woods, executive director of the global children’s rights organization Them Before Us

“It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government,” Mrs. Trump insisted in her 2024 memoir.

“Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes.”

President and Mrs. Trump see eye to eye on abortion

Mrs. Trump’s dedication to abortion appears to be in line with her husband’s views. Despite claiming responsibility for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion has been able to flourish during President Donald Trump’s second term.

The Trump administration has refused to restore the in-person dispensing requirement or enforce a federal law banning the distribution of mail-order abortifacients.

“Trump is the problem. The president is the problem,” Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America president Marjorie Dannenfelser told The Wall Street Journal. “It’s shameful that the Trump administration’s inaction has forced pro-life states to take their battle to the federal courts.”

“It’s very clear that the issue is perceived as the third rail, and you just have to stay away from it. You cannot utter the A-word,” Dannenfelser added.
