A mother who wanted chose life in a risky pregnancy despite doctors’ advice is celebrating the decision nearly a year later.
In August 2013, sixteen weeks into her pregnancy, Katy Evans felt her water break. Ignoring the advice of doctors to abort her son Leo, she chose to let “nature take its course.” Two weeks later, something happened that even the doctors had never seen — her amniotic sac had refilled. Five months later, her son was born healthy.
While Evans said that the consultant made the correct offer to abort Leo, she also says that it was important to give Leo every chance at life.
MailOnline reports that Evans, who says that she is “a positive person, by nature,” spent two days researching her condition, known as preterm prelabour rupture of membranes. Doctors told her that her baby had a one percent chance of survival, and could be born without limbs or unable to breathe. Evans was also at risk, for infection.
However, Evans said that she “refused to give up on the pregnancy or mourn this baby until we knew exactly what was happening.”

After two days in the hospital, a consultant asked if she wanted an abortion. But Evans, who has said that she “already loved this little person,” refused to end her son's life.
Eventually, Evans left the hospital, then went back for a check-up. Shockingly, the doctors found that fluid had refilled in the sac, and the baby was developing quite well. A few months later, Leo arrived, safe and sound.
According to MailOnline, Evans' condition “can lead to high morbidity and mortality” for mothers, and is extremely dangerous for children. However, at least for this couple, the decision for life was one of the most rewarding experiences of their marriage.
