TORONTO, September 17, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The National Post, Canada’s only national daily that is somewhat small “c” conservative, today cut 120 jobs, including 53 from the newsroom. Canadian media baron Israel Asper, who purchased the remaining 50% of the paper only three weeks ago, hinted major changes were coming to the paper. Asper’s CanWest operates the very liberal Global television network and over 25 Canadian newspapers.

Sources at the Post told LifeSite that during a speech there today Leonard Asper, chief executive of CanWest, mentioned three times that he wanted the paper to remain a small “c” conservative paper. However, according to political analysts, the definition of small “c” conservatism on the part of liberals usually amounts to fiscal conservatism and moral liberalism.
