BELLEVUE, Nebraska (LifeSiteNews) —Nebraska governor Pete Ricketts says he intends to fully outlaw abortion in Nebraska should the U.S. Supreme Court overturn Roe v Wade this summer.

“If Roe v. Wade, which is a horrible constitutional decision, gets overturned by the Supreme Court, which we’re hopeful of, here in Nebraska we’re going to take further steps to protect those preborn babies,” Ricketts told CNN host Dana Bash during an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” last Sunday.

Bash noted that Nebraska is not counted among the 13 states that have a post-Roe trigger law in place which would automatically outlaw abortion if Roe v. Wade is overturned, meaning that the governor would have to call for a special legislative session and pass new legislation to introduce the ban.

“If Roe is overruled and overturned, will you call a special session to ban abortion in Nebraska?” Bash asked.

“If we do get that Roe v Wade overturned, I will work with our speaker of the legislature to work on a special session and do more to protect preborn babies,” replied Ricketts.

“We’ll have to wait and see what that decision is before we can take further steps, but that would certainly be my intention,” he added.

When asked by Bash whether he believed that the ban should include cases of incest or rape, Ricketts replied that children conceived that way are “still babies.”

Nebraska is a pro-life state. I believe life begins at conception, and those are babies too,” he said.

In the past few years, Nebraska has passed increasingly pro-life laws.

In 2010, it became the first state to ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, and on August 15, 2020, it passed legislation to outlaw dismemberment abortion procedures.

But last month, Nebraska’s state legislature failed to pass  a pro-life “trigger” law that would automatically ban abortions in the state if Roe v. Wade were overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Even though a majority of the legislature supported the bill, it failed to obtain the 33 votes needed to overcome the filibuster that blocked the bill, falling short by two votes in a 31-15 result.

According to LifeNews, a complete abortion ban in Nebraska would save the lives of thousands of babies every year.

Indeed, despite recent pro-life legislation, Nebraska’s health statistics show that 2,378 abortions were still performed in that state in 2021.

Hopes for a complete ban have been rekindled in the Cornhusker State after a leaked majority opinion showed the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v Wade

Since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling imposed abortion on demand upon all 50 U.S. states, more than 63 million unborn babies have been killed in abortion procedures.
