CANTERBURY, England, March 3, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Dr. Rowan Williams, the self-styled “hairy lefty,” was finally enthroned last week as the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury since St. Augustine, who arrived in England from Rome in 596-97.  Last year, Williams told media that strengthening the number of homosexual priests in the church is not on his agenda. But Williams has publicly supported homosexuals in the church and has admitted ordaining a practicing homosexual. Some traditionalists, mostly from the Evangelical Christian wing of the Anglican church, protested outside the cathedral wearing black armbands. Most evangelicals, who represent the most dynamic and growing elements of the church, reject their new leader’s liberal social views.  Williams’ reply is that, “It comes to be an issue about the significance of the Bible and the authority of the Bible. And it’s not for many people primarily about sex, it’s about what you think of the authority of the Bible”—a quote that seems to jibe with evangelical views. Williams also stressed his opposition to war in Iraq.  For the story in which Williams denies a homosexual agenda (Dec. 2002):  https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2599353.stm   For newswire coverage:  https://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20030227/ap_wo_en_po/eu_gen_britain_archbishop_of_canterbury_4   For related coverage:  ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY ARGUES IN FAVOUR OF HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONSHIPS https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2002/nov/02112607.html
