FREDERICTON, Dec 7, 2000 (LSN.ca) – New Brunswick Provincial Health Minister Dennis Furlong admitted yesterday that the Liberal Government in Ottawa is urging the province to finance the private abortuary of prominent abortionist Henry Morgentaler. The province pays for abortions up to the 12th week of pregnancy committed at hospitals by an obstetrician-gynecologist after the approval of two physicians. But Morgentaler, whose baby-killing franchise business has made him a fortune in Canada, is complaining that his Fredericton “clinic”, which aborts babies at least until 16 weeks, is not funded.
The Canadian Press reports that documents obtained under the federal Access to Information Act and published in New Brunswick newspapers state the province’s refusal to cover fees at Morgentaler’s is a “suspected” or “confirmed” violation of two principles of the Health Act: comprehensiveness and accessibility. In addition, the province’s refusal to pay the same amount for out-of-province abortions as it does for those performed at New Brunswick hospitals is a possible breach of the principle of portability.
Furlong retorted, “If there’s any threat to the Canada Health Act in New Brunswick today, it would be the distribution of funding between the federal government and the province rather than this issue.”
