WASHINGTON, October 30, 2002 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Bush administration has issued new regulations that, for the first time, classify human embryos used by scientists for experimental material as “human subjects.”
The change, part of the revised charter for the federal advisory committee that oversees the safety of research volunteers, is seen as a political victory for opponents of embryonic stem cell research and experiments with unborn human tissues generally. Now, scientists may possibly begin to feel some restriction of their untrammeled freedom to experiment with human life in its most fragile stages.
Media are suggesting the change “could wreak havoc” with fertility clinics. “We do not think that an entity that is designed to protect human subjects of research is the appropriate place to deal with the regulation of reproductive tissues,” said a spokesman for the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
