WASHINGTON, D.C., March 29, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — In a review of available scientific literature, three physician-researchers have found evidence that women using hormonal birth control do conceive children, who are then destroyed by the chemicals in an early abortion.
Researchers Donna Harrison, Cara Buskmiller, and Monique Chireau published “Systematic Review of Ovarian Activity and Potential for Embryo Formation and Loss during the Use of Hormonal Contraception” in the January 2019 Linacre Quarterly, a peer-reviewed publication of the Catholic Medical Association. Having examined scientific papers dating back to 1990 that studied the use of hormonal contraception, they found evidence that high levels of estrogen and progestin hormones, which circulate when ovaries produce ova, are accompanied by the conception of embryonic babies who die.
In an email response to LifeSiteNews, Dr. Harrison explained that the study shows that eggs are “released much more frequently during the use of hormonal contraceptives than was previously thought.” She wrote that when eggs are released during the use of hormonal contraception, progesterone (the hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy) is not produced very well. Hormonal contraception, she wrote, interferes with the woman’s “ability to produce progesterone to sustain a human embryo.” Dr. Harrison, while acknowledging that much more research is needed, expressed concern over “how many embryos are actually produced during the use of hormonal contraceptives and what happens to those embryos created but which do not live long enough to produce a positive pregnancy test at the end of a cycle.”
In the abstract of the paper, the authors wrote that because the progesterone produced while taking hormonal contraceptives is lower than previously known and can thus lead to embryo loss, they recommend that this information should be included when establishing informed consent for women who are considering the use of hormonal contraception.
The summary of the paper states that the authors found that women using hormonal birth control (including the birth control pill) may experience “abnormal ovulation, or release of an egg followed by abnormal hormone levels[.]” It added, “This may increase the number of very early human embryos who are lost before a pregnancy test becomes positive. For women who are thinking about using hormonal birth control, this is important information to consider.”
At a conference on Catholic teachings on contraception and abortion in 2006, Toronto-based endocrinologist Dr. Maria Kraw described how hormonal contraceptives may actually serve to end the life of a tiny human being at the very beginning of pregnancy. In a talk titled “Medical Consequences of Contraception,” Dr. Kraw said she refrains from using the word “contraception.”
“This is because it implies solely the ‘prevention of conception,’” she said, while adding that hormone dosing results in abortion and other negative consequences. She noted that hormonal birth control works by introducing artificial estrogen and artificial progesterone (progestins) at four to 10 times the amount produced naturally by the human body. These high levels of hormones, she said, induce the brain to cause ovulation to stop, having been triggered by an ostensible pregnancy.
While hormonal birth control can prevent conception by preventing sperm from entering the cervix and thus fertilizing eggs released by the ovaries through the fallopian tubes, it also prevents an embryo from being implanted. This occurs when a new human being has already been conceived, Kraw stated, after the artificial hormones have thinned the uterus lining. “So rather than sort of snuggling into a nice nourishing uterus to continue development,” she explained, “the uterus is hostile and the embryo is discarded.”
