EDINBURGH, October 27, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Newly installed Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, who has publicly yo-yoed between questioning Church teachings and then making repeated professions of fidelity, has once again confounded observers about what he really stands for.  Most recently, Cardinal O’Brien has asserted the long-debunked Kinsey statistic suggesting 10% of the general population is homosexual.  The Scotsman reports that in a recent interview, Cardinal O’Brien spoke about homosexuality among priests saying, “If 10 per cent of men are gay then it’s a reasonable assumption that 10 per cent of priests and 10 per cent of bishops are gay, but it is what you do about it. If they are living a celibate life, then God bless the men.”  Much of Alfred Kinsey’s influential research is now known to have been based on unrepresentative prison inmates and unscientific records kept by secret pedophile sources who claimed to have molested hundreds of children from 1917 to 1948.  Even the homosexual activist community has admitted this and distanced itself from Kinsey and the ridiculous statistics quoted by Cardinal O’Brien.  Given the new cardinal’s penchant for left-leaning controversy, many Catholics have been pondering why the decision was made to elevate Archbishop O’Brien to the rank of Cardinal and not Archbishop Mario Conti, who took over the Glasgow diocese after the death of the late Cardinal Winning.

Archbishop Conti is widely regarded as much more orthodox, that is supportive of all Church teachings, and a strong defender of the sacredness of human life.

Expressing the sentiments rather crudely but thought-provokingly, Catholic columnist Rod Dreher wrote: “One of those rock-ribbed conservatives with which the American media assures us that John Paul II is filling up the college of cardinals, is making news in Scotland. Archbishop (and cardinal-designate) Keith O’Brien of Edinburgh is now saying the Catholic Church should have gay priests, married clergy, and that the ban on contraception should be reconsidered. Why is it that the Pope named this guy cardinal, while a perfectly orthodox Catholic prelate who agrees with the Holy Father, Archbishop Mario Conti of Glasgow, was available?”  See LifeSite’s previous coverage of Cardinal O’Brien:  New Controversial Scottish Cardinal Swears to Uphold Church Teaching on Homosexuality and Contraception and Celibacy Rule https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2003/oct/03101002.html   See details on Kinsey form LifeSite:  KINSEY: CRIME OF THE CENTURY https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/1999/jan/99012803.html MORE ALFRED KINSEY HORRORS EXPOSED https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/1998/aug/98081104.html GAY ACTIVIST ADMITS FOUNDATION OF LIES https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/1999/feb/99020202.html   See the Scotsman coverage of the Cardinal’s comments:  https://www.news.scotsman.com/scotland.cfm?id=1081872003
