UNITED NATIONS, Dec 20, 2000 (LSN.ca) – A new report compiled by the Mahbub Ul Haq Human Development Centre in Pakistan says that ultrasound technology has been used to target baby girls for abortion. The UN sponsored 2000 Report on Human Development in South Asia is not against abortion but seeks to address the trend to abort babies based on sex. New Zealand media report that a survey of Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives said some 79 million women were “missing in South Asia” due to discrimination against females, both before and after birth. The report says the “missing women” are demonstrated in demographic statistics showing there are only 94 women for every 100 men in South Asia while the ratio worldwide is 106 women for every 100 men.
