NEW YORK, May 14, 2001 (LSN.ca) – New York City Comptroller Alan Hevesi is attempting to use his influence to pressure Wal-Mart to sell the abortifacient morning after pill Preven. Hevesi, who is campaigning for mayor, was ridiculed for his obvious electioneering by Mayor Guiliani’s spokesperson Sunny Mindel. “Once again, Alan Hevesi is putting political pandering ahead of his responsibilities as the city’s chief fiscal officer,” said Mindel.

The New York Post reported that Hevesi claimed his interest in the case was genuine because of his role as an adviser on investing the city’s pension funds, which own more than 10 million Wal-Mart shares, valued at $600 million.
