ST. JOHN’S, Newfoundland, November 11, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Newfoundland government has decided not to oppose a same-sex “marriage” challenge before the courts launched by two lesbian couples. The provincial government’s excuse for its inaction is that the issue is a federal one.
The federal government refused to defend traditional marriage in both the Manitoba and Saskatchewan decisions earlier this year. It is therefore not expected to defend traditional marriage in Newfoundland either. “The province will not support and it will not oppose the application,” Attorney General Tom Marshall said Wednesday. “Under the Constitution of Canada it is the federal government that has constitutional authority to deal with capacity to marriage and we’re going to defer to the federal government.” A Saskatchewan judge struck down a ban on same-sex “marriage” last week. Activist judges have ushered in similar rulings for Ontario, BC, Quebec, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and the Yukon and have made Canada into an attractive haven for gay activists from around the world who are increasingly immigrating into the country. Concerned individuals can write to Newfoundland Progressive Conservative legislator Clyde Jackman, at [email protected] to encourage the government to reconsider.
