ST. JOHN’S, February 8, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Newfoundland pastor appealed a Newfoundland judge’s same-sex “marriage” ruling to the province’s Supreme Court of Appeals, as reported Wednesday.

Gordon Young is legally allowed to appeal the ruling, since he was granted intervener status in the original lawsuit, launched by two activist homosexual couples last year. The provincial Supreme Court ordered the province to grant the couples – and all homosexuals –“marriage” licenses upon request in December.

Young’s appeal argues that marriage is not a human right. “The way I see it at this point in time, the traditional definition of marriage is not discriminatory,” he commented to Corner Brook’s The Western Star.

“My main argument would be that it’s not a human rights issue and therefore it should not be changed. If gays and lesbians want somehow to live together, they can have a union but not change the existing marriage law.”

The appeals court has not yet responded to the challenge.
