COLUMBUS, Ohio (LifeSiteNews) – The newly-appointed bishop of the Diocese of Columbus, Ohio previously celebrated the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) and said attendees are “looking for reverence and beauty.”
“Congratulations to Fr. Earl Fernandes, who the Holy Father has named the next bishop of Columbus, OH,” Una Voce Greater Cleveland wrote on its Facebook Monday. “Fr. Fernandes was administrator of Cinncinnati’s [sic] primary Latin Mass parish from 2014-2016.”
While at Sacred Heart parish in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Fr. Fernandes celebrated the (TLM) every Sunday, according to a 2015 interview with a Catholic publication.
“Most of them are young,” he said of the attendees at TLM. “They’re looking for reverence and beauty, a sense of transcendence, and to be connected to their parents and grandparents, the generations of faith.”
“The Latin Mass is also quiet. There’s so much noise and business in our lives,” he said in the 2015 interview. “They enter into the liturgies interiorly and love it for its tradition, the Faith of their fathers.”
“At the confessions for the Latin Mass I’ll get Spanish speakers, French-speaking Africans, many kinds of people,” he said. “Latin Masses provide a universal experience, a sense of mystery.”
Fr. Fernandes will be consecrated as bishop on May 31. He replaces Bp. Robert Brennan, who left to become the bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn. Bp. Brennan invited the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest to open an apostolate in the Ohio diocese in 2020.
