OTTAWA, Nov 1 ( – The next Canadian census, scheduled for 2001, will ask respondents if they are practicing homosexuals. Although the final decision on wording has not been completed, the questionnaire will likely provide an option to indicate that one has a “same-  sex partner.”

The Ottawa Citizen reported today that Pierre Turcotte, Statistics Canada’s chief of housing, family and social statistics, noted that statistics on “sexual orientation” have been requested by the federal justice and finance departments, the provinces, academic researchers and insurance companies, among others.
