Nicole Kidman “Thrilled” at Pregnancy News

By Hilary White

HOLLYWOOD, California, January 10, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Superstar actress Nicole Kidman will not be carrying on with a film shoot because of an unexpected pregnancy. The actress, 40, and her husband Keith Urban, a country music singer, are said to be thrilled by the development, even though it means that Kidman will not follow through with her starring role in the film The Reader. British actress Kate Winslet will take the role instead.

Nicole Kidman in Vanity FairKidman pulled out of the film over fears about the effects of the strain of filming during pregnancy.

The actress has two adopted children – Connor, 12, and Isabella, 15 – with ex-husband Tom Cruise. Before her wedding to Urban, Kidman told media that she wanted children. She told reporters in 2005, “I have got hormones running through my system. That is why I sit wriggling, saying I want to have a baby.”

Even as the Hollywood machine continues to champion abortion as a woman’s fundamental right, more and more big name stars are having children, most notably Angelina Jolie and husband Brad Pitt, the current darlings of the tabloid press. While in some quarters of the entertainment press the trend is disparaged as making children into the latest trendy accessory, others have applauded this reversal of the anti-child mentality, especially as film stars are often seen as role models for young girls.

In recent years more films have shied away from depicting abortion as a positive good. Two major films in 2007, “Juno” and “Knocked Up,” while far from being pro-life or pro-family films, nevertheless depicted teenagers who decided against abortion for their unexpected pregnancies.

Not everyone is happy about the little celebrity baby boom, however. In December of last year, when the younger sister of pop singer Britney Spears, Jamie Lynn Spears, announced that she was pregnant and intended not to have an abortion, Joyce Arthur of the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada complained that abortion is becoming the “ignored” option.

“It certainly shows any young women watching these movies or following these celebrities that the best option is to have the baby and it glorifies that choice,” Arthur said.

“But it [abortion] is just sort of being totally ignored, as though no one would ever even think of doing that. But abortion is a very commonly resorted-to option for women, especially unmarried teenaged girls,” she added.

Kidman, however, is said to be delighted at the news of her pregnancy, and the media is full of congratulatory notes from other celebrities. Katie Holmes, the current wife of Kidman’s ex-husband Tom Cruise, called the news “wonderful.”

“I’m so happy for her,” Holmes, 29, said.
