RALEIGH, North Carolina (LifeSiteNews) – The North Carolina Museum of Art cancelled a taxpayer-funded Drag Queen Story Hour event for children as young as two following a burst of backlash from the public.
The cancellation came after news of the event and its intended audience circulated across social media. On Monday, conservative activist Christopher Rufo posted on Twitter about the planned “Artful Story Time.”
“The North Carolina Museum of Art is hosting a ‘drag queen story hour’ for children as young as two,” he wrote. “The museum promises to promote the ‘gender fluidity of childhood’ and unleash a ‘maelstrom of passion’.”

On Tuesday, an article in The Carolina Journal broke the news that the event, which was “funded in part by taxpayer dollars,” has been canceled “amid community protest.” The museum has since removed the page on their website which publicized the event.
Prior to its cancellation, the story hour was advertised as an opportunity to “celebrate all the wonderful ways you are you” and that it was “best for ages 2 and up with adult caregivers.” The description promoted a drag queen who goes by “Stormie.”
“Whether twirling and twisting like the wind on stage, showing her [sic] lightning-fast wit on the mic, or hosting Science with Stormie, where she teaches the amazing wonders of science, Stormie is a maelstrom of passion, education, and lookin’ good!”
The website also explained the details of a drag queen story hour as “just what is sounds like—drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores.”
“DQSH [Drag Queen Story Hour] captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. In spaces like these, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, where dress-up is real.”
Although the museum’s Artful Story Time program does not entirely consist of drag queens exposing children to sexual content and ideas, it has hosted similar events in the past. In April, the same drag queen was featured, advertised with the same description as the cancelled event.

Drag Story Hour (DSH), which sponsored the event, is an international organization dedicated to spreading the LGBT agenda among local communities, particularly children. According to the group’s website, it was formed in 2015, beginning with “drag queens reading stories to children in libraries” and growing “into a global phenomenon.”
Although local organizations manage and fund their own events, DSH serves as a directory for people to find local “chapters” across the world, with most groups located in the U.S.
