NEW YORK CITY (LifeSiteNews) — New York City Mayor Eric Adams fired a recently appointed education advisor after the New York Daily News reported her views on homosexuality.

Mayor Adams named Kathlyn Barrett-Layne on Tuesday to the Panel for Educational Policy (PEP), along with eight other appointees. PEP is the governing body for the city’s education department. His administration asked her to resign hours after the announcement.

The Daily News took credit for getting her removed from the board after it reported on several books Barrett-Layne had written. Barrett-Layne, who is black, runs a faith-based organization and Pentecostal church.

“Leaders struggle with the same temptations of drugs, alcohol, homosexuality, fornication, adultery, pedophilia, stealing, lying, envy, covetousness, and every other sin that the congregation struggle with,” Barrett-Layne wrote in a 2013 book called “Challenging Your Disappointments.”

“They live in the grip of fornicating homosexual lifestyles,” Barrett-Layne wrote about prisoners in the same book, according to the Daily News.

She also wrote, in another book called “When Your Mess Becomes the Message,” about praying for her 3-year-old daughter after she said she was a boy.

Barrett-Layne wrote:

At the end of that prayer, my daughter asked me if she was a girl. When I told her yes, she happily began to sing and rejoice about being mommy and daddy’s little girl. To tell you this was one of the most frightening experiences I had with my little girl is an understatement.

The mayor’s office has already scrubbed Barrett-Layne’s name from its list of appointees. “We were unaware of these writings and we’ve asked her to resign,” a mayoral spokesperson told the Daily News.

A version of the announcement archived by LifeSiteNews says that Barrett-Layne “is a certified New York State and New York City school and district administrator, and has worked as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and field supervisor in New York City public schools.”

“Dr. Barrett-Layne spends her time inspiring people with her speaking and teaching in Bible studies, worship services, and leadership conferences,” the announcement stated. “She is the 2003 recipient of the NAACP William A. Morris Humanitarian award, the 2013 Urban League Charles Langere Community Service Award, and the recipient of a number of community service awards, proclamations, and recognitions.”

While the mayor’s office may have satisfied activists by withdrawing Barrett-Layne’s appointment, other appointees with strong views against homosexuality still remain close to Adams.

Gilford Monrose has been picked as a faith advisor to Mayor Adams and is the executive director of the Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships for the city. Just last week he participated in a discussion in New York City with federal Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona.

Monrose has said homosexuality is “a lifestyle that I don’t agree with” and equated it to “to smoking and adultery,” the New York Post reported. Adams also appointed a pro-life, pro-Biblical marriage pastor, Erick Salgado, to an immigration outreach role in his administration.

Homosexual activists have also taken issue with his appointment of Fernando Cabrera to a role as a faith advisor. Cabrera allegedly praised laws against homosexuality in Uganda, though he denies it.
