NEW YORK, November 6, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) –  New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has written that he is supporting President Barack Obama in part to secure his daughters’ access to abortion.

“When I step into the voting booth, I think about the world I want to leave my two daughters, and the values that are required to guide us there,” Bloomberg wrote in an op-ed last Thursday for his eponymous news service.

“The two parties’ nominees for president offer different visions of where they want to lead America,” he said. “One believes a woman’s right to choose should be protected for future generations; one does not. That difference, given the likelihood of Supreme Court vacancies, weighs heavily on my decision.”

Bloomberg also cited his support for redefining marriage as a reason he is backing the president’s re-election.

Obama “recognizes marriage equality as consistent with America’s march of freedom,” the mayor wrote. “I want our president to be on the right side of history.”

Bloomberg has said he planned to spend as much as $15 million to influence the 2012 elections through his new super PAC, Independence USA. Among his beneficiaries is Bob Dold, the Illinois Republican who defended federal funding of Planned Parenthood

The New York mayor has also channeled half-a-million dollars into marriage redefinition campaigns in Maine, Minnesota, and Washington, and personally campaigned on the issue in Maryland.

“This spending sends a clear message that the mayor intends to keep his wallet open after he leaves office to influence national policy around issues like guns, education and marriage equality,” an anonymous “highly-placed Bloomberg adviser” told The Jewish Voice. “If anything, leaving office will free him to do even more.”

The Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent strongly considered running for president in 2008 and again this year under the auspices of a fledgling third party known as “Americans Elect,” a group closely aligned with the “No Labels” movement

On October 5, Bloomberg gave Americans Elect $500,000.

The mayor has long been hostile to social conservatives. Last March, Bloomberg signed a controversial gag order directed at crisis pregnancy centers.

That summer, he gave the four Republican state senators who voted for New York’s same-sex “marriage” bill the maximum campaign contribution allowed by law. One retired and a second lost his primary fight in September.
