BURBANK, CA, October 25, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – President Obama appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night, where he warned his audience that “Roe v. Wade is probably hanging in the balance” this election.
While Obama is an ardent supporter of abortion-on-demand through all nine months of pregnancy, Mitt Romney has repeatedly stated that he believes Roe v. Wade was wrongly decided and should be overturned.
Obama pointed out that whoever is elected as president on November 6 may be given the chance to appoint two new Supreme Court justices. With the court narrowly split on the issue of abortion, those appointments could tip the balance in favor of overturning the 1973 decision that legalized abortion nationwide.

Obama was responding to a question from Leno about U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock of Indiana, who has come under fire for remarks opposing abortion in cases of rape.
During a debate with his opponent last week Mourdock said he struggled with the issue, but ultimately decided that “even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.” Critics have accused Mourdock of saying that God intended for the rape to happen, an interpretation that the candidate has passionately disavowed.
“I don’t know how these guys come up with these ideas,” Obama said when asked about Mourdock’s comment. “Let me make a very simple proposition: rape is rape. It is a crime. And so these various distinctions about rape don’t make too much sense to me. Don’t make any sense to me.”
Obama added that the episode “underscores…why you don’t want a bunch of politicians, most of them male, making decisions about women’s healthcare decisions.”
“Women are capable of making these decisions in consultation with their partners, with their doctors, and for politicians to want to intrude into this stuff oftentimes without any information is a huge problem,” he said.
Obama used the opening to defend Planned Parenthood, again claiming that the abortion giant offers “mammograms” – something even Planned Parenthood acknowledges is false.
The president concluded his remarks about abortion and Planned Parenthood, saying that they are “family issues,” and “not just women’s issues…because women are bringing in half the income in a lot of households,” he said.
In addition to opposing Roe v. Wade, Romney has promised to work to defund Planned Parenthood, and to restore the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits U.S. funds from being used to promote abortion overseas. Obama revoked the Mexico City Policy on his first day.
