WASHINGTON, D.C., May 3, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Obama administration has threatened a veto of a bill set for a House vote tomorrow that would ensure an end to taxpayer funding for abortion in all parts of the federal government.

“The Administration will strongly oppose legislation that unnecessarily restricts women’s reproductive freedoms and consumers’ private insurance options,” said the White House in a statement. “If the President is presented with H.R. 3, his senior advisors would recommend that he veto the bill.”

H.R. 3, or the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” would make permanent and universal in law the language of the Hyde Amendment, a “rider” approved annually that bars taxpayer funds for abortions, except in cases of rape and incest. Currently it applies only in Labor, Health and Human Services appropriations bills.

Pro-life lawmakers and leaders say the measure is critical for sealing up various possible venues for taxpayer-funded abortion created by the massive health care reform bill passed last year. Currently, the Hyde amendment only applies to the bill through an Executive Order, a document dismissed by both pro-life leaders and abortion giant Planned Parenthood as a “symbolic gesture” unable to withstand a court challenge.

H.R. 3 has the support of 227 cosponsors, more than half of the entire body of House legislators. The House is expected to hold a final debate and vote on the measure Wednesday.

Chris Smith, the author of the law, has announced a press conference scheduled for noon Wednesday in support of the law.

Ending taxpayer funding for abortion has proven consistently popular in American polls. A CNN poll this month showed that 61 percent of respondents opposed public abortion funding, a number consistent with data in recent years.
