OKLAHOMA CITY (LifeSiteNews) — An Oklahoma Democrat state representative announced a “tongue-in-cheek” proposal to mandate vasectomies for teen boys in protest of Oklahoma’s recently passed, sweeping abortion ban.

“If you really want to end abortion, if that’s your objective, then I would invite you to co-author a bill that I’m considering next year that would mandate that each male, when they reach puberty, get a mandatory vasectomy that’s only reversible when they reach the point of financial and emotional stability,” Oklahoma House Minority Whip Mickey Dollens proposed last week before his state legislature.

“If you think that’s crazy, then I think that maybe you understand how 50 percent of Oklahomans feel, as well,” he added.

Dollens made the proposal to “prove a point” after the Oklahoma legislature’s approval of HB 4327, which bans abortion from the moment of conception, with exceptions only for rape and incest as well as to save the life of the mother. Like the Texas Heartbeat Act it is modeled after, it empowers private citizens to file lawsuits against abortion providers rather than relying on state prosecution.

Oklahoma’s Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt has promised Oklahomans he would “sign every pro-life bill that hits my desk,” and is expected to sign the measure into law.

Dollens explained to MSNBC host Katie Phang, “To kind of fight fire with fire, I proposed a tongue-in-cheek proposal to mandate vasectomies to just prove a point of how absurd and ridiculous it is to regulate one’s bodily autonomy.”

“I will be on the record to say I don’t believe that government should regulate anyone’s reproductive system, but in this case it seems to have really resonated,” he continued.

Asked by LifeSiteNews if he believes the unborn have a right to life at any point, Dollens said he believes that right begins at the point of viability. He also believes that the question of whether the onset of that right to life should change according to the shifts in gestational age of viability, which is now decreasing because of technological advances, is “best” left to “medical experts.”

He added that he is “open to a discussion on what the month number of viability is,” but believes that enacting protection of human beings from “the second of fertilization” is “extreme.”

Dollens expressed concerns to LifeSiteNews that actions to ban abortion don’t necessarily accompany support for laws that would help care for children once they’re born, such as Oklahoma legislation proposed earlier this year that would mandate child support from fathers as soon as a child is conceived.

“If Oklahoma is going to restrict a woman’s right to choose, we sure better make sure the man involved can’t just walk away from his responsibility,” wrote the bill’s sponsor, Forrest Bennett, who later apologized to fellow Democrats for potentially hurting the pro-abortion cause with the bill’s language.
