OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (LifeSiteNews) – Last week, Oklahoma lawmakers passed a bill prohibiting allocated government funds from covering gender mutilation surgeries for minors at Oklahoma University Health, one of the state’s major providers of healthcare.

“We think there are some decisions that minors should not be able to make that are life altering,” said Republican Senate President Greg Treat in a press conference following passage of Senate Bill 3. “Those are decisions that are best left for adults.”

Republican Gov. J. Kevin Stitt has yet to say whether he will sign the bill into law.

Senate Bill 3 distributed nearly $40 million to Oklahoma University Health efforts in children’s mental and behavioral health. The Joint Committee on Pandemic Relief Funding, which is part of the state’s American Rescue Plan Act, determined that the money should not cover so-called gender “transition treatment” for minors.

In June, legislators became aware that Oklahoma University Health was offering transgender treatments to children.

The Oklahoma Senate and House of Representatives passed the bill on September 29.

According to the bill summary, “gender reassignment medical treatment” includes “any health care to facilitate the transitioning of a patient’s assigned gender identity on the patient’s birth certificate, to the gender identity experienced and defined by the patient.”

Specific “treatments” are identified as “interventions to suppress the development of endogenous secondary sex characteristics,” “interventions to align the patient’s appearance or physical body with the patient’s gender identity,” and “medical therapies and medical intervention used to treat gender dysphoria.”

Treat emphasized that the bill funds much-needed mental healthcare.

“The investment in children’s behavioral health is something that is going to be one of the biggest achievements that we’ve been able to do in my legislative career,” Treat said.

Treat also pointed out that the support for the behavioral health of minors has grown since the social impact of the pandemic has begun to show.

“We are absolutely behind on mental health treatment for kids and COVID exposed that in a very big way. Kids being out of school, at home on their computers often – I’m not saying it created it, but it definitely brought it to light for a lot of parents.”

According to the Senate president, the bill outlines situations in which children cannot “enter into contracts” or make other decisions even with parental consent.

“Our laws do not allow a parent to say, you know what, we think you’re mature enough to start drinking and have your friends over and have a keg party at our house,” said Treat. “Our laws are very clear on that. We take away that so-called freedom because it’s in the best interest of society and it’s in the best interest of the kids.”

University hospitals are receiving increasing backlash for “transgender” services offered to minors. Last month, Vanderbilt University was exposed for offering these irreversible medical interventions, described by one of its doctors as a “huge money maker.” The governor of Tennessee has since launched an investigation into the medical clinic.

Oklahoma Children’s Hospital is also planning to cease unspecified “gender medicine services” as the legislature cracks down on transgender procedures and “treatments” for minors.

Puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and amputations of healthy body parts have become standard “treatment” for minors in the U.S. who “identify” as the opposite sex, despite a host of data indicating that most kids will outgrow gender confusion without medical intervention. The transgender movement has also been confronted with the emerging stories of “detransitioners” who regret undergoing irreversible surgeries and/or life-changing cross-sex hormones.
