TORONTO, July 17, 2002 (LSN.ca) – While Canadian news headlines warn of serious social and economic problems to come because of Canada’s low birth rate, the nation’s institutions continue to demean marriage and family life, the source of children. The attacks on Canada’s social foundation have almost entirely by-passed democratic procedures through court imposed law changes, inner cabinet orders or forced votes in Canadian legislatures.

The latest development is Ontario’s ‘Conservative’ Premier Ernie Eve’s public support for the Ontario Divisional Court’s astonishing unanimous ruling imposing legalized homosexual marriage.  Eves stated “Everybody has their own personal point of view on this issue. My point of view on this issue is that if two people decide that they want to be in a union, why would I interfere with that? That’s my personal point of view.”

While the issue is outside of the Ontario government’s jurisdiction to appeal, the Premier also suggested he would not use the provincial notwithstanding clause to avert the ruling and similarly warned other provinces.  Indicating how very little he thinks of traditional family life Eves stated, “Ontario has never used the notwithstanding clause for anything. I think it has to be a pretty serious fundamental issue before a province thinks about using the notwithstanding clause for anything. It’s not a power … that any province should take lightly,” he said. “It is a power that says … ‘notwithstanding what’s written in the Constitution we are going to override and overrule: We know what’s better.’”  Meanwhile, federal Justice Minister Martin Cauchon said that Ottawa is considering allowing the ruling to stand.  “I’m not saying that we’re not going to [go along with the ruling],” Mr. Cauchon said. “I mean, in each and every case where we’re facing the judgment from a court, we take the time to proceed with a good analysis of the situation and then after, we get back to the people.”  See related LifeSite coverage:  ONTARIO COURT ORDERS RECOGNITION OF HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2002/jul/02071201.html   See the National Post coverage:  https://www.nationalpost.com/home/story.html?id={10012414-47C4-4820-B9D7-DFFDE900AF9A}
