TORONTO, Dec 6, 2000 (LSN.ca) – A panel appointed by Ontario’s Conservative government to look into education in the province has recommended the government shell out $1 billion for universal daycare and full-day junior and senior kindergarten in the province. The National Post reports today that the Education Improvement Commission headed by Dave Cooke, a former NDP education minister, says that “licensed, organized daycare is needed, as opposed to subsidies to help pay for an untrained babysitter.” In plain terms, the Commission refuses to allow parents to decide on the best upbringing for their children, insisting (through financial incentives) on state-licensed daycare over a mother’s care at home.

The situation in Canada is already so discriminatory against stay-at-home Moms that Canadian Beverly Smith complained about Canada’s unfair treatment to the United Nations. Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition said, “we hope the Ontario Tories will not add to the already unjust discrimination against parents who sacrifice their careers to stay at home with their children.”
